6 Tips to Reduce or Prevent Eyestrain

Many of us are spending more time than ever looking at screens. Whether we are working from home, taking classes online, or just trying to stay connected with friends and family, it's become increasingly difficult to unplug. While we may not be able to completely avoid screen time and the causes of eyestrain, there are some things we can do to reduce symptoms.

Eyestrain is a common problem, but it doesn't have to be. In this blog post, we'll share six easy tips for preventing eyestrain!

Adjust the Lighting

Although eyestrain is usually nothing serious, it can be uncomfortable and disruptive. The first thing you can do to reduce discomfort is to adjust the lighting in your environment. If you're sitting in front of a window, close the blinds or curtains to prevent glare. You may also want to invest in an anti-glare screen for your computer or phone.

Take Breaks

It's important to give your eyes a break from staring at screens all day long. Every 20 minutes, look away from your computer or phone and focus on something else for 20 seconds. This will help reduce the strain on your eyes and prevent them from getting too tired.

Limit Screen Time

One of the best ways to reduce eyestrain is to reduce your screen time as much as possible. If your job requires you to be on a computer all day, it may not be realistic to completely limit your screen time. However, if it's an option, try to take some time each day to disconnect from electronics and give your eyes a break.

Use Artificial Tears

Also known as lubricating eye drops, artificial tears can help to moisturize dry eyes and reduce the irritation caused by extended periods of screen time. Just be sure to choose a product that's compatible with contact lenses if you wear them. In addition, they can also help to flush out any harmful particles that may be lodged in the eye. For best results, use artificial tears throughout the day as needed, and make sure to consult with your doctor if you experience persistent symptoms.

Improve the Air Quality of Your Space

The quality of the air in your home or office can have a big impact on your eyesight. Dust, pollen, and other airborne particles can irritate your eyes and cause inflammation. To improve the air quality in your space, try using an air purifier or introducing some plants into your environment as they're natural air filters!

Choose the Right Eyewear

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, make sure they're up-to-date and prescriptions are accurate. Wearing corrective lenses that aren't right for your eyes can actually cause more strain. Regular checkups with an optometrist are important for maintaining good vision health, especially if you spend a lot of time looking at screens. An optometrist can help identify any underlying problems that may be contributing to digital eye strain and recommend the best treatment options for you.
